The Hasselhoff/Elton Don Connection
I had joked on the phone with the mysterious "Dave" but never once actually took Jeff seriously when he told me "Dave" was actually Knightrider and Baywatch star David Hasselhoff. In fact it was the running gag in my house when I'd get home from the studio, did "the Hoff" join in on the session today?
Fast forward a couple of years and I managed to find myself on tour with Jeff and the Hoff. Although we pretty much knew each other from chatting on the phone, it was still a surreal experience for me to be in his company.
During a break in rehearsals in Chur, Switzerland, David expressed concern that he had been told that he wasn't pronouncing my name properly, but he was determined to get it right. I told him not to worry as my name is an Irish name and most non Irish had the same problem. He insisted he would try. We sat down by the piano so I could break down the pronunciation of my name into easy chunks for him.
I explained my name is Donal. It's phonetically pronounced "Dough - NAL, a kin to Donut."
That didn't help Mr David Hasselhoff at all and I could read the frustration on his face. "Ok, let's try another approach" I said, feeling sorry for him.
"In America, you have McDonalds, Ok so take the MC from the beginning of McDonalds… Donald… Yep very good. Now take the last D from Donald…."
David's eyes lit up. He was having his eureka moment. "I got it" he exclaimed with the joy of a 5 year old who managed to rob the entire cookie jar and bring it back to his room.
David proclaimed with a big smile "I have it …. ONALD !!!"
I took a deep breath, held it and quietly shook my head.
He was gutted. To break the tension, I started to play the piano and when doing so, I came up with a solution, "David, if it makes you feel better, Just call me Don for short"
As I played the next notes, he looked at me over the piano and defiantly said … "No, i won't call you Don … no, from now on when you're at the piano. I will call you, Elton Don !!!"
And so the legend began.
